Our last post featured a group of widows who planted a field of corn together using Foundations for Farming (FfF) methods. They also planted sunflowers. Now we feature their harvest:
The corn is harvested and shelled by hand which takes time but allows the women to share stories and laughter. There is seldom any silence as they joke and tease each other as they work.
Tea break, of course!
Sunflowers were harvested. Now the women are removing the seeds. These will be crushed for cooking oil.
Their corn yield was 11 (100kg) bags per acre. This is almost 3 times the average yield for our area of Morogoro. The women are happy to have learned a sustainable method of growing corn for profit. They plan to share what they have learned with their neighbors.
They divided the harvest among themselves and insisted that we take a share of the corn as well.
We thank God for these women and the diligence they have in following this scripture-based FfF plan.
